ON MUSICIAN AND MUSIC

ON MUSICIAN AND MUSIC

‘The musicians are the messengers of Music, never are they the music-makers. Music is already made…’

Anything created must dissolve someday, sometime: this is the law of nature. If Music were to be created by us, the musicians, then it ought to have dissolved one day. But, Music has never vanished; it is living timelessly. What has made it live timelessly? One may say that, it is the beautiful workmanship of musicians and the continuance of Guru-Shishya Parampara that has made it possible to live till date. But what and who created this workmanship? The answer would be obviously: from Guru(s), thoughts, experiences, contemplation. Who created these experiences and contemplation? What made us think on Music and experience it in a particular way(s)? Why do the thoughts and experiences differ from one musician to another, and make the same piece of music be heard differently from different musicians at different times and ages? One may respond that it is all the matter of mental evolution and different ways of unveiling beauty by different ideas of varied musicians who grasp varied instructions (Vidya) from their respective gurus. Then what is the source of such mental evolution? And why do the ideas differ in musicians in beautifying it? The ideas differ because of many factors like differences in personality, influences, teachings, learning-process, cognitive ability, memory retention, experiences and also the differences in the mindsets. And the source for such an evolution of different ideas, thoughts and mental images is Music which makes us perceive it from different angles to beautify it accordingly.

… Therefore, we can sum up that Music is the source of Itself with no start or end – It is the Almighty, Paramatma, Brahman, Atman, Soul, Nadabrahma, Shakti, Energy, Melodious Energy (Nada-roopi Shakti). It is the cause for Its eternal living, It is ‘absolutely beautiful’ in Itself, It is the Melodious Energy that is prevalently spread through musicians timelessly.

During the primary stages of learning Music from the spiritual point-of-view, when we identify ourselves as the ‘music-students’ or ‘musicians’  (not yet as ‘Music’), then we are only the manifestations of this vital Energy – never are we the creators or makers of Music – we are only the messengers of Music who are passing on the divine, beautiful message of Music from one soul to another soul, and to the ‘Soul’ – in order to make Music more divine and beautiful. Music is infinite in Itself with countless traits, personas and everything. We are only the finite medium to ‘witness’ Its infiniteness, and we become the ‘medium’ to spread Its infinity to a certain, possible extent. As John Keats says in his ‘Ode on a Grecian Urn’, “Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know." Music is Truth. So does the prime responsibility of the musician lives every moment in preserving and sustaining Its Beauty and Truth, and in being ‘just’ to Its Natural Formless Form.
Nonetheless, with advancement in our spiritual flight in Music, we can ‘become Music’ and ‘live eternally’ when we ‘self-realize’ and become ‘absolutely conscious’ that there is only One, Perfect Energy (Paramatama) living in the entire cosmos while all the physical bodies, spirits, souls and other elements in the universe are the mere, delusive manifestations of this Energy. We can become Music when we seek the universal identity with this Melodious Energy, Music, and never feel the line of separation between musician and Music. We can become Music when we worship It perennially. It is only then we become Music spiritually and never identify ourselves physically and mentally as ‘I’ and ‘the musician’ anymore. It is then we surrender to Music completely by becoming Shoonya (Absolute Null), attaining Moksha (Absolute Freedom) and freeing ourselves permanently from egocentricity, physicality, physical pleasure, covetousness, possessions, delusions of music-making and being the musicians, and from the mere grammar-hunting in music (because though grammar is music, music is not grammar). Thus, even after completely realizing and becoming Music, ‘we’ are never the Music-makers as there do not exist ‘we’ and ‘I’ figures in Reality, but Music, and ‘Music’ alone, prevails in  the Cosmos, the Universe.
“So, Music is made by Itself, It is the Peace and Bliss in Itself”.
